Third Sarsanghachalak (1915–1996)
A leader of resilience. A champion of service.
Born in Nagpur in 1915, Balasaheb Deoras was attracted to RSS ever since his childhood, rising through the ranks with an unwavering spirit of dedication. With degrees in Sanskrit, Philosophy, and Law, he combined intellectual depth with practical leadership.
As the third Sarsanghachalak, Balasaheb steered RSS through some of the most challenging times in independent India, most notably during the Emergency of 1975, when the Sangh was banned and swayamsevaks were imprisoned without any reason. Under his guidance, RSS led a historic Satyagraha, standing firmly for democracy and national freedom.
Balasaheb emphasized seva (selfless service) as a core expression of patriotism.
During his tenure, RSS expanded its social initiatives, reaching out to tribal communities, North-Eastern Bharat, and underprivileged sections, where he transformed ideals into grassroots action. His speech in 1974 in Pune’s Vasant Vyakhyanmala, is considered as a landmark as he strongly insisted on social equality.
He believed that nation-building is a lifetime commitment and inspired swayamsevaks to become agents of positive change in society.
Balasaheb’s life is a powerful reminder to today’s youth: lead with courage, serve with humility, and stand unwavering for the nation.
