Rooted in India’s civilizational ethos, the concept of Swadeshi guided the freedom struggle under leaders like Lokmanya Tilak,Swatantryaveer Savarkar, Yogi Aurobindo, and Mahatma Gandhi. Post-independence, the need for total economic freedom led to the formation of Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) on 22 November 1991, with the support of organizations like BMS, BKS, ABVP, and visionary ideologue Dattopant Thengadi.

Launched formally on Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary in 1992, SJM began a mass movement against economic imperialism and continues to mobilize over 15 allied organizations today. Its ideology stands apart from capitalism and socialism by emphasizing Dharma, family, and social institutions over market-driven individualism. SJM envisions a self-reliant Bharat rooted in cultural values, balanced development, and conservation of natural wealth. It asserts that markets must serve society—not dominate it—and that Dharma, not mere law, must guide societal transactions.

Swadeshi encourages responsible consumption, personal savings, and national asset preservation—not rejection of wealth. Historically, India’s prosperity attracted explorers and invaders alike, but Swadeshi treated wealth as a societal good, not a personal status symbol. In essence, SJM seeks a just global order based on Bharatiya wisdom—where national unity, self-reliance, and spiritual economics shape Bharat’s future.
