Physical strength has been an integral part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since its inception. Founded by Dr. K.B. Hedgewar, RSS has always emphasized the importance of both physical and mental well-being. Dr. Hedgewar, who was deeply influenced by revolutionary groups during his youth, firmly believed that a strong and healthy citizenry was vital for the country’s progress. This philosophy continues to guide the RSS, making physical exercise a key component of its daily activities. The RSS operates through a network of shakhas , where physical fitness plays a central role. Initially, many young individuals are drawn to these shakhas through the allure of sports and physical activities. These exercises not only build strength but also serve as a means of instilling discipline and unity.

At the shakhas, both children and adults participate in various drills and sports, helping them channel their energy in constructive ways. Physical training within the RSS is divided into two main categories: the disciplined physical drills and traditional sports activities. The former, known as 'Samta,' involves exercises that prepare participants for route marches and other physical tasks. This form of training instills a sense of discipline, focus, and physical endurance. In addition to drills, RSS emphasizes the importance of indigenous sports like Kabaddi, Kho Kho, and Dandgol, as well as traditional exercises such as Suryanamaskar.

These activities are chosen not only for their physical benefits but also for the values they impart, such as teamwork, equality, and self-discipline. Through these sports, RSS aims to cultivate qualities like brotherhood, collective responsibility, and personal growth. Furthermore, RSS believes that physical exercise is not just about building strength but also about enhancing emotional and intellectual well-being. Engaging in regular physical activity helps swayamsewaks develop qualities that are essential for personal and social life. These include humility, restraint, and self-determination, which contribute to the overall development of a person.

The RSS also actively promotes physical training by organizing periodic camps and training programs. These initiatives ensure that individuals with an aptitude for physical exercises are identified and nurtured, reinforcing the movement's commitment to fitness. In conclusion, the physical aspect of RSS activities is more than just a means of exercise. It is a pathway to shaping disciplined, balanced, and responsible citizens, embodying values that transcend the physical realm into emotional and intellectual spheres.
