India’s vast and diverse borders—land, coastal, and mountainous—pose complex challenges, including infiltration, smuggling, terrorism, and illegal migration. These threats not only destabilize the border regions but also risk altering demographic patterns and undermining national sovereignty.

While the Army and Border Security Forces guard the frontlines, Seema Jagran Manch (SJM), established on Ram Navami in 1985 in Jaisalmer, affirms that border protection is a shared responsibility of every citizen. Active in 24 states, under various regional names, SJM mobilizes civil society to create awareness and foster participation in national security. From Bharatmata Pujan to sensitizing locals in vulnerable zones like Uttarakhand and Northeast, SJM encourages vigilance, patriotism, and community cohesion.

A major focus lies in preventing depopulation of border villages by promoting connectivity, education, healthcare, tourism, and self-employment. SJM also highlights success stories—like a Bakkarwal villager warning Indian forces during Kargil—as models of citizen participation in national defense. Through grassroots engagement and collaboration with authorities, SJM bridges the gap between patriotic duty and everyday life, ensuring border security is not only a matter of surveillance, but of civilizational responsibility.
